On this page
We build Gushi, a Chinese learning app, and Gushi Schools is ours too. Read this with that in mind. Below we say what the map does well, and where it stops.
What is on the map
Every entry comes from the school's own pages. A phone number or an e-mail is only there if the school printed it. We never guess contact data. Where we found none, the card says the website is the way in.
| Kind of place | How many | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Language schools | 1,997 | Adults, often children too |
| Universities | 1,260 | Students, often evening courses for everyone |
| Weekend schools | 496 | Children, often second-generation Chinese |
| Confucius Institutes | 483 | Adults and children, often with HSK exams |
950 of them teach online. 279 are official HSK test centres. We counted on 4 November 2026.
How to find your school
- Open the globe at schools.gushichinese.com. The page speaks English and German.
- Pick your country, or type a city in the search. The globe flies there.
- Say who the course is for: adults, children, or second-generation Chinese. Then pick the kind of place.
- Pick a textbook if your class already uses one, or if you want to stay with a book you know.
- Open a school. The card shows its courses, the levels from A1 to C2, the days of the week, and whether it teaches on site, online or both. It also says if the school is an official HSK test centre.
Prices, textbooks and contacts need a free Gushi account with a confirmed e-mail. It is the same account as the Gushi app, and it costs nothing. A school can also offer a discount to Gushi learners. The Learner discount filter shows the schools that do.
Not sure which level to ask for? Open the HSK 3.0 word lists and take the short quiz under the level you think you are at.
Online: lessons in your own language
Not every learner has a school nearby. The Online tab is a list instead of a globe: every school that teaches online, for the whole world. Today that is 950 schools. Independent tutors who teach online can add themselves too.
You pick the language the lessons are taught in: German, English, Spanish and so on. That matters more than it sounds. A beginner follows the grammar better when it is explained in a language they know well. We read it on each school's own pages. Where a school does not say, it sits under Not known yet until it tells us.
A school can also list its teachers, with the languages each one teaches in. Only teachers who agree to be shown are listed.
Upvotes, not stars
With a Gushi account you can give a school one upvote. One per school, for as many schools as you like. A second press takes it back. There are no downvotes and no stars, so nobody can pull a school down. More upvotes move a school up the list.
Two kinds of school come first, and both are marked: Gushi's partner schools and a few we feature. After them, the upvotes decide the order.
What to ask a school before you sign up
The card answers the first questions. Ask the school the rest:
- Is there a trial lesson?
- How do they find your level? A placement test is better than a guess.
- Which textbook, and how far in a year?
- How many people are in a class?
- Do they prepare for the HSK? If you want the certificate, ask if they teach the new HSK 3.0 levels.
Run a school? Add it for free
Gushi Schools is free for schools. If your school teaches Mandarin, you can:
- add your school if it is missing, or correct your entry if something is wrong;
- add your logo, prices, textbooks and teachers;
- say whether you teach on site, online or both, and in which language;
- offer a learner discount to Gushi learners, if you want to.
Press Add your school on the page. The Gushi team checks every entry before it shows, and that takes 1 to 2 days. When the school itself confirms its entry, the card gets a green badge. An edit that someone else suggests is checked the same way, so nothing changes on your card without a person looking at it first.
If your school uses a textbook that Gushi follows, your card says so, and your students can review each lesson in the app. Want to talk about more? The same page has Partner with Gushi, with a 30-minute call.
Add your school on Gushi Schools
Where it stops
- It is not complete. China's education ministry counted nearly 20,000 Chinese schools abroad in 2019, most of them small weekend schools. We have 4,236 places. If yours is missing, add it.
- Many schools do not publish prices or textbooks. Then the card says so, and asks anyone who knows to suggest an edit.
- You do not book through the page. You contact the school yourself.
- The page speaks English and German. Spanish and French are not there yet.
- Online tutors are new. The list starts with schools. Tutors come in one by one, through the form.
Other ways to find a Chinese school
| Where | What it lists | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Gushi Schools | All four kinds of place above, and online tutors | 4,236 places in 186 countries |
| Confucius Institute list | Institutes only | about 500 to 550 |
| CSAUS | Its member weekend schools in the US | 468 |
| Course marketplaces | Courses you book and pay on the site, such as Language International | about 300 Mandarin courses in 11 countries |
| Tutor marketplaces | Private tutors, not schools, such as Preply and italki | thousands of tutors |
| Google Maps | Anything with a pin | no courses, levels or textbooks |
The counts come from each list or from news reports, in November 2026. A course marketplace is the right choice if you want to book and pay in one place. A tutor marketplace is right if you want one teacher just for you. Gushi Schools is for finding the school itself, near you or online.
Between lessons, an app keeps the words fresh. The best apps for HSK 3.0 compares seven of them, ours too. Gushi is one month free, then a subscription. See the app.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gushi Schools free?
Yes, for learners and for schools. Prices, textbooks and contacts need a free Gushi account with a confirmed e-mail.
How do I add my school?
Open schools.gushichinese.com and press Add your school. Fill in your entry, and your logo and prices if you like. We check it in 1 to 2 days, then it shows.
How are the schools ordered?
Gushi's partner and featured schools come first, and they are marked. After them, schools with more upvotes from learners rank higher. There are no downvotes.
Can I find online Chinese lessons taught in German or English?
Yes. The Online tab lists every school that teaches online, and you pick the language the lessons are taught in. Schools whose pages do not say sit under Not known yet.
Where can I take the HSK exam?
At an official HSK test centre. 279 places on the map are one, and their card says so. Ask the centre for its exam dates.
Is it the largest directory of Chinese schools?
It is the largest we know of. We looked for other lists in November 2026. The biggest list of schools we found was the Confucius Institute list, with about 500 to 550 institutes. Tutor sites list more people, but no schools.
