Structure: nine levels in three bands

HSK 2.0 had six levels, one after the other. HSK 3.0 has nine, grouped in three bands:

  • Elementary: HSK 1 to 3
  • Intermediate: HSK 4 to 6
  • Advanced: HSK 7 to 9

Levels 7, 8 and 9 are examined together, and the syllabus gives them one shared word list.

Vocabulary: about twice as many words

The biggest change is the size of the word lists. HSK 1 alone now asks for 300 words, twice the old 150. By HSK 6 you need 5,400 words, and the advanced band takes you to 11,000.

Here is what each level asks for. Words and characters are counted in total, so each row includes the levels below it.

HSK 61,8005,4001,940700
HSK 7 to 95,60011,0003,0881,200

Characters: reading and writing are now two lists

HSK 2.0 had one list of about 2,600 characters. It never said which of them you had to write. HSK 3.0 splits them for the first time:

  • 认读字 (rèndú zì), characters to read: 3,088 in total, about 19% more than before.
  • 书写字 (shūxiě zì), characters to write by hand: 1,200, a smaller set inside the reading list.

This is good news for you. You have to recognise every character on the reading list, but you only have to write a little more than a third of them from memory. Spend your handwriting time on the 1,200. Learn the rest for reading.

Grammar: a syllabus for the first time

HSK 2.0 never published a grammar syllabus. So nobody could say for sure which structures belonged to which level.

HSK 3.0 lists its grammar points level by level. Our hub has 428 of them so far, each with what it does and an example sentence. The list is not complete yet, and each level's grammar page says how many points the official list holds.

Skills: five instead of mainly two

HSK 2.0 tested mainly listening and reading. HSK 3.0 tests five skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation.

Speaking changed the most. Under HSK 2.0 it was the HSKK, a separate exam that you booked and sat on its own. In HSK 3.0 speaking is part of the HSK exam itself. If you only ever trained your ears and eyes, you now need to train your voice and your hand too.

What to do if you studied HSK 2.0

First, the plain truth: the old levels do not map one to one onto the new ones. The names stayed, the content did not. An old HSK 1 had 150 words, the new one has 300. An old HSK 6 needed about 5,000 words. The new HSK 6 needs 5,400, and there are three levels above it. So the level you studied for under HSK 2.0 is not your level under HSK 3.0.

The good news: you do not start again. Your gaps will mostly be in two places, the vocabulary and the new split between reading and writing characters. Here is a simple plan:

  • Find your level. Each HSK 3.0 word list ends with a ten-question quiz. If most words are new, try the level below. It tests vocabulary only.
  • Check the lists, not the level name. Download the words, characters and grammar points for your level as CSV or JSON, free and with no account. Mark what you already know.
  • Fill the word gaps first. That is where HSK 3.0 grew the most.
  • Split your character work. Learn to read the characters of your level. Practise writing only the ones on the 书写字 list.
  • Add speaking and translation. They are part of the exam now, so practise them from the start.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HSK 2.0 and HSK 3.0?

HSK 3.0 has nine levels in three bands instead of six, about twice the vocabulary (11,000 words), separate lists for reading characters (3,088) and writing characters (1,200), a published grammar syllabus and five examined skills. Speaking is no longer a separate exam.

When did HSK 3.0 start?

The syllabus was published in November 2025. The first regular HSK 3.0 exams are on 13 December 2026, and from then on every HSK exam follows it.

Is my HSK 2.0 level the same in HSK 3.0?

No. The levels do not map one to one. The new HSK 1 alone has twice the words of the old one. Take the quiz on the word list of the level you think you are at to see where you stand now.

How many words do I need for each HSK 3.0 level?

HSK 1 asks for 300 words, HSK 2 for 500, HSK 3 for 1,000, HSK 4 for 2,000, HSK 5 for 3,600 and HSK 6 for 5,400. Levels 7 to 9 are examined together and reach 11,000 words in total.

What happened to the HSKK?

The HSKK was the separate speaking exam of HSK 2.0. In HSK 3.0 speaking is part of the HSK exam itself.

Where can I find the HSK 3.0 word lists?

On the HSK 3.0 hub: all 11,000 words, 3,088 characters and 428 grammar points, searchable, with pinyin and meanings. You can also download them as CSV and JSON.
